I'll play a music director: Steeve Watz

TOI talks to musician Steeve Vatz, off the stage and without a guitar in hand
I'll play a music director: Steeve Watz
One of the latest sensations from an unsung tribe of guitarists, Steeve Vatz, has mapped his way to the top with ease and of course, his inevitable style. His performance may not be about lung-power or screaming showmanship, but his role is to just be ‘rock’ solid!
Although he doesn’t hail from a family of musicians, Steeve took to the guitar, quite early.

“When I was 11, I borrowed my neighbour’s guitar and began strumming for fun. I chanced upon one musical note after the other and before I knew it, there I was — exploring scales, notes and ultimately, the world of strings.” Always eager to spread knowledge, Steeve uses his free time to practise and teach his students. “I began teaching in my teens owing to financial requirements. From having just five to six kids from my neighbourhood, the school saw 1,200 kids in a span of three years,” he says.
Teaching might have taken a backseat now for the rockstar but he’s forayed into commercial music and recording in the last decade. “I was playing for gospel bands when singer-composer Timmy suggested that I try my hand in films too,” says Steeve, who has performed and collaborated with composers like Harris Jayaraj and A R Rahman on world tours and in projects such as Slumdog Millionare and Vaaranam Aayiram.
In fact, for those who watched Suriya strum the guitar in Vaaranam Aayiram with a flamboyant body language, it was Steeve who tutored and groomed the actor. More recently, Steeve has worked extensively on the albums of Engeyum Kaadhal and Ko. “I’m playing the role of a music director in Ko,” he says, excitedly. “I’m looking at pulling a juggling act by dabbling with both music and acting,” he adds.
“At the audio launch of Ko, I was asked to rap and dance on stage. Choreographer Brinda ma’am was so fond of me; she kept pushing me to shed my inhibitions,” he says.
Beneath all the multi-variate genres, collaborations and characters he has portrayed, Steeve’s purpose remains constant. “I want to play and make music which will make people forget their worries and rekindle their zest for life,” he signs off.
